I mean, the story begins with an unmotivated rampage through the streets of late-night Bangkok and ends with the implication of even more pointless violence, so it’s pretty clear that you’re not really meant to root for an “action hero” here. And while Only God Forgives is frequently accused of burying its narrative underneath a pile of artsy excess, I think the heart of the film is rather straightforward despite its obtuse presentation. I mean, the moral here is basically “revenge isn’t fun,” which I think is made clear by the horrific use of violence (though we’ll discuss that further in the next section). Long story short, owners of the 2018 Scorpion Releasing disc probably don’t need this special edition from MVD. In the slightly over-complicated 1982 film, House on Sorority Row, the scholastic friendships were just that — a little crazy and a little sour. The film, directed by Mark Rosman (Mutant and many episodes of Lizzie Maguire) begins as so many early 80s films did, a little exposition, a little flashback, and a little glimpse of things to come later in the film.

Don’t mind the trickiness because Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger write their re-imagining indebted to The House on Sorority Row. Maybe late-2000s remake fatigue led to the marketing position in an attempt to separate Sorority Row from trolls screaming for more originality in horror cinema (countless remakes showcase creative originality, don’t get me started)? It’s undoubtedly farther removed from The House on Sorority Row than The Hitcher is from Robert Harmon’s inaugural ride or Quarantine from Spain’s infinitely scarier outbreak — but we shouldn’t shun its remake merits.

What follows is a surreal dive into the seedy underbelly of Bangkok as the cycle of revenge escalates and violence leads to even more violence. For either version, the raw elements show their age with average definition, telecine wobble and even jitter. This is not eye candy and the film transfers are organically authentic but limited reproductions of troubled source material. The finally act of House on Sorority Row folds in on itself by resurrecting the flashback exposition from the beginning of the film. There’s no right or wrong way to engage with art, but there are some films that clearly require more effort from the audience side in order to be effective. And while you can’t blame cinemagoers for just wanting to enjoy some passive entertainment, I think it’s always worth trying to meet a work of art on its own terms before judging it.
Composer Richard Band’s score and the New Wave rock band playing in the party scenes are heard in crisp fidelity with few limitations beyond slightly timid higher frequencies. The sound design is fairly lackluster and primitive by today’s standards but fits the low-budget slasher’s grittier production ethos. Despite using familiar tropes and hewing closely to the usual slasher formula, The House On Sorority Row has surprisingly decent character development backed with a solid cast. The well-paced screenplay sets up the basic premise with panache while a few nice twists keeps the audience guessing. Sorority houses are a great setting for slashers and this movie is a first-rate example of that trend. A wild college party makes fertile territory for fresh kills and several memorable death traps.
The one-sheet poster and advertising were created by Film Ventures International's regular advertising agency, Design Projects Incorporated. Design Project's owner, Rick Albert art directed the key art and title treatment design. The key art was illustrated by Jack Lynwood, who painted illustrations for many motion picture campaigns during the late 1970s and '80s. The copylines were written by distributor Film Ventures International's Edward L. Montoro.
Partly inspired by the 1955 French film Les Diaboliques, first-time writer-director Rosman wrote the screenplay for the film in 1980, then titled Seven Sisters. The film was shot on location in Pikesville, Maryland in the summer months of 1980, with additional photography taking place in Los Angeles. He worked at Home Depot until he was fired by its “loss prevention” unit for giving his family too many discounts. Today he’s reading about bridge building for his summer internship at the Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering.
